You can choose the track by clicking on the track name or by scrolling to it using arrows, scroll bar, page up/down and begin/end, or by typing the first characters of the name. My involvement with the Engineering Department at WITR, (the campus radio station at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY), had me searching for a digital replacement for the station's 'cart' system. I realized that all we really needed was a system that could play 16 bit, CD-quality sound files in real time from a very large hard drive or hard drives and software to handle hard drive back ups and sequencing the items to be played. Again I realized that these tasks would be simple and inexpensive to achieve with the Macintosh and its operating system. So, here it is!

Therefore it is probably only useful for DJs, who want to determine the speed of a music title. There are two different ways to find out the bpm rate with MacBPM - BPM Time-Recording (BPM Counter...) - The user has to enter the beats for a certain period of time, while the computer is couting them. During this process, the program permanently determines the actual bpm rate. BPM Beat-Recording (Quick BPM Counter...) - In this mode, the user has to enter a certain number of beats. The program calculates the bpm rate using the number of beats and the time, which is used for entering these beats.

Not only can SoundEffects change sounds in many ways through its variety of effects, but it can also handle multi-channel sounds, sampled at any rate up to 64kHz and with any sample size between 1 and 32 bits. Drop-launch a movie onto the application (or choose a movie from the open dialog). You will be prompted for a location for the resulting sound file. That sound file is a plain ol' System 7 sound file that can be played by opening (double clicking). You can also extract sound from music CD's. Movie2Snd does all of its work in memory, so you'll need to set the application memory size large enough to accommodate the sound. 1/2 of the target movie's file size is a good rule of thumb (use VM for large movies).

Noises 1.31.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:N-P:Noises 1.31.sit 1.31 0 12K 1/13/95 Noises 1.31 - Are you tired of hearing the same startup sound every time? I sure was. So I wrote Noises. Just throw Noises into your Extensions folder, and make a folder called Noises Folder (also in the Extensions folder) with some sound files in it. Pretty simple. It is worth pointing out that if you try to drop sounds, or a folder with sounds in it, onto your System Folder icon, the Finder will want to put all the sounds in your System file, so you should instead drop the files directly into the Noises Folder. Noises only recognizes System 7 Finder sound files, like the ones you get when you drag a sound out of your System file. Folders inside the Noises Folder are ignored.

Of course, to do that you need a frequency <-->note table. I've include one in a Microsoft Word file. Just print it.

SndControl 2.2.2, like Apple's Sound control panel, allows you to change the sound your Mac utters whenever it needs to beep at you. Ultra Recorder Supports 3 compression levels, that can reduce the sounds that you record by up to 600%. Ultra Recorder saves your recorded sounds directly to double clickable sound files, no more messing around in your system files. Ultra Recorder needs a Mac with sound input capabilities. Conversion into SoundApp-compatible NeXT .snd files is supported on Power Macs and 68020 or better Macs. On slower machines, e.g. a Mac II, conversion will be extremely slow. Sounds can be played or converted using the left or right channels only, or in stereo. Stereo playback requires more CPU power, of course. True 16-bit playback is supported on all Macs if the hardware supports it. To abort playback or conversion, type command-period....

By using the hotkeys you can raise or lower the volume at any time. Essentially Sounder does two things. It provides instant keyboard access to the volume level of your Mac. And it purposely does not save this information to PRAM (non-volatile system parameter memory). The Mac will always power up with the selected default volume level that you have set via the Sound Control Panel. Sounder does not use fancy graphic gadgets or beep sounds to indicate that it is working. It simply flashes the menu bar to let you know that the volume is changing. This is plenty of feedback for a relatively small task like

Each of them contained one or more sound resources. They were (and still are) a very popular way of storing sounds. When System 7.0 was released, we saw that one of the new Finders features was to play a sound by clicking on its icon. The problem is that this cant be done with sound suitcases. Here is where SoundExtractor comes in. Just drag a suitcase on top of SoundExtractors, and a new folder will be created. This folder will have a custom icon of a folder with a little speaker on it, and it will contain all the sounds that were in the sound suitcase. But now, double-clicking on the sounds will play them!

The sound must be in a Finder sound file called Startup Loop inside the Extensions folder (or in the System folder if youre running System 6). Since youll want Startup Player to start playing early in the startup process, you may add a space before the extension name. If youre using some kind of startup manager, put Startup Player among the first extensions to load. QuickTime 1.6.1 and 1.6.2 seemed to prevent Startup Player from playing its sound at startup, whereas version 2.0 works fine. You should install QuickTime 2.0 if you haven't already done so.

This version includes 11 different sounds. With a key combination, SoundScape can be turned on or off from the keyboard at any moment. The main difference between 2.0 and 2.1 is the use of asynch sound routines. Asynchronous sound routines allow the bird calls to play without momentarily freezing the screen. Asynchronous sound is available only on the Macintosh SE/30, Macintosh II family and above. Version 2.1.1 fixes a bug that prevented the quick key on/off from working properly while certain applications were being used and lets the mac do other things while the bird is chirping. These albums (with names like Persuasive Percussion or Captivating Percussion) featured a left/right channel check at the beginning of each song and utilized the most forced and unnaturally separated stereo recording imaginable - the idea was, Hey, there are two speakers; let's make that REAL obvious! Now that I have a Mac with stereo speakers, I find that I have regressed a bit and want each and every sound my Mac makes to exploit its stereo potential. With that in mind, here are a few sounds that are inspired by those old percussion albums. Hey,...

It's sound quality, features, and flexibility compare to sound editors costing hundreds of dollars. It has the look and feel of a totally modern, highly polished, Mac program that's very solid, intuitive, and easy to use. Some of it's features are normally only found in commercial sound editors, like sound drawing tools, envelopes for controlling effects over time (pitch bending for example), and LFOs for vibrato and tremolo effects. Not only does it edit prerecorded sounds, but it can also create sounds the exact same way a real synthesizer does, with Oscillators, Filters, Envelopes, and LFOs.

It can open almost any type of file, one at a time, but can play 'snd ' resources only. It is a sound player; it cannot edit sounds. Use Loop Sequencer to play and loop sounds. More importantly, you can put any sounds in a file you have opened into a Sequencer list. You can add these sounds in any order, and as many times as you want. Then you can play them in this sequenced order. I created this utility because in designing games, I needed to put together music segments that I could loop. No utility I knew did this, so Loop Sequencer was born. Source code is included, written in MetroWerks C/C++ CW4.

Place each single channel at arbitrary positions in the stereo triangle. When the program is started, the wand of the metronome begins to swing back and forth, making a tick sound at the end of each swing. The sound can be turned on or off using the Options menu, and the frequency can be set to any number of beats per minute between 1 and 160. Metronome is designed to be run on a color monitor with 8-bit color, but will also work with other color settings or with gray scale monitors. Although it will run on a black and white monitor, some of the graphics won't show up.
Fret Navigator 1.2.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:F-G:Fret Navigator 1.2.sit 1.2 0 245K 3/16/94 Fret Navigator 1.2 - FretNavigator can find chords, scales, intervals, and chordal progressions on any stringed instrument. You can also all to the repository of chords, scales, tunings and instruments it knows about. You can also play what you see through the speaker or through MIDI. The program took about a year to write, it is written in C+- using the TCL and Think C 5.0. At the moment I have no plans to put any time into it, it does what it says it does, and I don't know of any bugs at the moment. Fret Navigator is incompatible with version 3.0 of the sound manager. FIX - Don't play sounds through the speaker, use MIDI. Fret Navigator is incompatible with 16 bit color mode. FIX - Set Monitors to 256 colors
DataSnd 0.8.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:D-E:DataSnd 0.8.sit 0.8 0 53K 3/07/94 DataSnd 0.8 - Basically, this is a program that will read in a file and extract all data from the data fork and attempt to convert it to a sound. If you decide it will be cute to open a 2 meg non sound file then you may have fun listening to the horrible noise. (It will be painful, and you can't abort it unless you have the ASC (Apple Sound Chip.). This program runs on machines without the ASC. (Machines like the SE and Plus.) System 7 is required, however. I don't think the stereo function works, so if I ever find a stereo VOC / WAV file then I will test it out. Please let me know if it works or not. To use DataSnd, just open a file. When you get a box asking for a sampling rate, just try them all until one works.
Mini Recorder 2.1.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:M:Mini Recorder 2.1.sit 2.1 0 229K 2/25/94 Mini Recorder 2.1 - Essentially with this program you can record, play, edit by cutting and pasting, dub and mix sounds sampled at 8 bit and 22Khz. This is just a simple hack that was thrown together by another author. It dosn't have documentaion, and a few of the menus and dialogs are still in German, but most of the menus and dialogs are in English, as best as he could translate it. Your preferences should still be preserved from the German version. Be sure to look at the balloon help also. Please apply the patch to a copy and not your original. Ulaw Play 1.1.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:U-Z:Ulaw Play 1.1.sit 1.1 0 9K 12/30/93 Ulaw Play 1.1 - Drag and drop (requires System 7 and at least a 68020) finite memory infinite dimensional Ulaw (mu-law) sound file player. It recognizes both Sun Ulaw files and MIME headerless Ulaw files. It also plays the data fork of any file which usually means listening to a load of yuk. UlawPlay uses a double buffering technique to read in chunks of data from the input file, apply the inverse mu-law characteristic and play it all in real time. In this way the application doesn't need much memory and can play very large sound files (no upper limit in principle). You may hear a very small amount of noise between chunks but it is not too bad; all this probably depends on the processor speed used and the disk...
Ulaw 1.4.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:U-Z:Ulaw 1.4.sit 1.4 0 40K 12/30/93 Ulaw 1.4 - What is it? The application Ulaw converts mac sampled sounds to Sun Ulaw format sounds and vice versa. In one direction Ulaw extracts the sounds from the 'snd ' resources of any Mac file. Then it interpolates to the Sun audio 8kHz sampling rate and applies the standard Ulaw quantization characteristic. In the other direction it reads a Sun Ulaw Format Sound File and creates a double clickable Mac sound file (sfil) at any desird sampling rate. Any number of mac files can be dragged and dropped onto the Ulaw application icon and Ulaw will extract, play and store every 'snd ' resource in the resource fork of each file automatically. Requires System 7 and AppleEvents.
BriansSoundTool 1.3.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:B:BriansSoundTool 1.3.sit 1.3 0 116K 12/28/93 BriansSoundTool 1.3 - This is an increasingly less quick and dirty program to do drag and drop conversion to and from Windoze .WAV files and Mac sound files. If you open a non-Mac file with it, it will convert it to a Mac file, and if you open a Mac file, it will convert it to a Windoze .WAV file. The output options are fairly limited. For input however, a Macintosh file is - a system 7 sound file, an FSSD file (with or without HCOM compression), or virtually any file containing 'snd ' resources. Non-Macintosh input files can be .WAV files, Sound blaster .VOC files, Sun(/NeXT) -Law (provided they are 8 bit mono), Amiga 8SVX, and AIFF files.

SndVolume is a collection of tiny applications that take advantage of this to let you change the speaker volume on your mac almost instantly. You put the folder into your apple menu items or control panels folder and you can select any sound volume directly from the apple menu. There is a separate (tiny) application to set each volume number 0 - 7. You can even place them on the desktop for quick double clicking sound changing capabilities. Great if you are always changing the volume!

Sounds are saved in AIFF format, and your time is limited only to the amount of hard drive space remaining (not RAM dependent). SounDisk lets you record very long audio files, play back these files directly from disk, and with multifinder or system 7, you can play them in the background while your Mac does other things. The best quality file that SounDisk will produce is 22kHz, one channel, 8-bit samples. Works with system 6 or 7 and any Mac with a microphone, including the AV Macs.

It requires Apples Speech Manager, and fails gracefully if it is not present. It lists all installed voices in the Voices menu. You can choose which voice you want Welcome! to use in the future by selecting one. If you don't select any, it defaults to either Female Voice, if available, or the last voice installed, if not. Version 1.3.2 is a bug-fix, which fixes the darn bug that made it Thanksgiving all week (this one manifested at a job interview) and adds Halloween (no, I don't know how I missed it the first time. Try it.

Conversely, if you enter a number of milliseconds for any type of note-value, StudioCalc will tell you what the tempo is, in BPM, and will fill in the rest of the note chart accordingly. Using StudioCalc is easy - just click in any numerical field, type a number and hit ReCalculate ( or type ENTER or RETURN). The whole chart is updated based on the last number you typed in.

Tap 1.2.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:T:Tap 1.2.sit 1.2 0 14K 10/22/93 Tap 1.2 - Tap is a program that accurately derives a tempo reading from a user's tap input. Unlike other tap algorithms such as those in drum machines and most sequencers, Tap displays a running average tempo starting with the very first tap and hence, it gets more accurate the longer one taps. Other algorithms only take into account the last 4 or 8 taps and because the human finger is not that precise, nor will be the tempo. Future versions of Tap will hopefully use Midi and Audio as other sources of Tempo. Complete instructions are included.
Music Thru.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:M:Music Thru.sit 0 7K 10/22/93 Music Thru - Music Thru allows you to turn your Macintosh into a Public Address System of sorts. You will have to have a Macintosh with a microphone port, and some sound source plugged into it. We designed Music Thru to allow us to play Audio CDs through the microphone port on an LC II and then output the sound through the Macintosh speakers.Music Thru backgrounds nicely in System 7, so you can listen to those CDs while you work! If you own a Centris, IIvx or Quadra, you can do this already with an internal CD player... but we only had an LC II! I hope you enjoy this completely free piece of software!

Typing 0-7 will set the sound volume accordingly; typing Return, Enter, Esc or Backspace will leave it where it is. If the Caps Lock key is down, the dialog doesn't pop up and the sound volume is directly set to 0. After the sound volume has been changed, the standard beep will be played at the new volume.

It works pretty much like the old Font/DA Mover but it moves sound resources intead of fonts. In fact, creating a new sound file will create a font suitcase with a custom icon that makes it look like a sound suitcase; moving this suitcase inside System 7.1's Font folder (inside the System folder) will make the Mac believe it's a font suitcase, so it will be opened and all its sounds will be available in the Sound control panel right away. All this could be done manually with ResEdit, but it's a lot easier to do it with SoundCaser.
LoopSound 1.0.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:J-L:LoopSound 1.0.sit 1.0 0 18K 9/27/93 LoopSound 1.0 - WHY LOOP? I like to record sounds that can be looped; that is, they can be played over and over without any noticeable click at the end of each playback. SoundEdit lets you do that easily (you can play a loop by holding down the shift key when clicking on the play icon), but once you've saved the sound there's no way to loop it from the Finder. Many of my sounds don't even sound good if they're not looped, so I wrote this little application to play my loops. Just drop a System 7 sound file on LoopSound's icon and it will be played forever (until you quit LoopSound or drop another sound on it). System 7 is required.

Here comes the Async Family. Drop Mr.Player and Mr.Beeper in your system folder, select a new system beep (a LONG one) in Mr.Beeper's control panel and restart your Mac. All your system beeps will be asynchronous, and if you have a Mac with the Apple Sound Chip (all Macs but the 68000-based have it) you'll hear more than one beep at a time. You may also drop AIFF and System7 sound files on Mr.Drop to play them while you keep working (multi-megabyte files can be played without any trouble). Requires System 7.

A microphone picked up sounds that guests made, and at random intervals, they heard their own voices played at other parts of the room. The hack listens to the sound input device and remembers everything it hears (that is loud enough) and then plays those things back in a random order. If your Mac has stereo capability, then it also randomly chooses a speaker to play each sound. The more memory the program has allocated, the more sounds it remembers. Source code is included. Requires a Mac with a microphone, and System 7.
ModVoicer 1.1.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:M:ModVoicer 1.1.sit 1.1 0 10K 9/09/93 ModVoicer 1.1 - ModVoicer will let you open MOD files one at a time. It prefers files with SoundTrecker's signature, but will try to open anything you choose. The MOD file detection is minimal at this point. Once the file is open, you'll get a window with a list of the valid sample in the MOD. Double-clicking on a list item, or selection of several will open a window for each voice (up to 10 voices). When a sound window is in the front of the screen any noncommand keys will trigger the sound to be played at a frequency related to the ASCII of the key. The author's fascination with those cool amiga MOD files lead him/her to do this.

The soundtracks are saved as the name of the movie, with an '!' after the original name. To change the creator of the file, use ResEdit to change the 'TEMP' 128 resource. SoundTrack is free, as it was pretty much a nobrainer to write. It's based on DropShell and various chunks of Apple's QuickTime sample code. Thanks, guys! SoundTrack requires QuickTime version 1.6 or greater, since I don't think that the AIFF stuff is in QuickTime 1.5.
PC Beep.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:N-P:PC Beep.sit 0 4K 8/19/93 PC Beep - PC Beep is rather simple little sound that emulates a PC's (IBM) sound. It is useful for many different reasons - 1. It is much shorter than the standard Macintosh beep. 2. It sounds better than the normal Macintosh beep. 3. It adds to the awe of Soft PC. 4. If you have ever been in a telecommunications program, and are suddenly sent 20 or so beeps from another computer, your computer doesn't lock up playing beeps. 5. To this date, 100% of the Macintosh users we polled prefer PC Beep over the standard Macintosh beep. It is a cute sound.
HyperBlues.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:H-I:HyperBlues.sit 0 154K 7/27/93 HyperBlues - HyperBlues is a HyperCard educational stack which teaches about the guitar. Fanfare.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:F-G:Fanfare.sit 0 83K 7/10/93 Fanfare - Fanfare is fun little freeware init that sounds the trumpets when you start your Mac and plays a sound (sounds like a computer powering down) when you restart or shutdown. Uses virtually no memory (about 3K) so you don't have to worry about running out of memory. Works with System 3.3 and up!!
Strumulator.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:So-Sz:Strumulator.sit 0 98K 6/22/93 Strumulator - This is a HyperCard program which provides three lessons in guitar strumming. The first lesson - Strum down through your six strings to this rhythm of four quarter notes, one down-strum each. The second lesson - In order to follow one down strum with another, you have to move your hand back up, right? So let's make use of that up motion to create an eighth note rhythmic pattern! The program has play buttons so you can hear the teacher's version of each lesson. After a third similar lesson, you move to the Advanced Strumulator, where you can choose to play eighth or sixteenth strums or rests, and have the teacher play it. Cool program to use with a guitar strapped on!

This Shareware/Demo version is fully-functional except for one minor obstacle... It's upside down. (It is easy to use even upside down!).

This FKEY allows the user to set the volume level used for system beeps and some other sounds quickly, without all the tedious mucking around in the Control Panel. If $8500 seems a bit high to feel this experience, maybe this program I wrote will at least give you a taste of it. This is a System Extension (INIT), that will play the SAME sound the Quadra 900 makes when it boots up, on any Mac, with the added ability of being able to change the volume on the fly as the Mac goes through its boot sequence. If heard through an external speaker a very realistic sound quality is possible.

If you did not download the press release posted on 4/20, you could not have used the programs unless you had a music font already installed in your system folder. To avoid any further confusion about this file, I am uploading this maintenance version that does not need the font. If you have already downloaded the previous versions, you can fix the problem by down loading the small press release file from 5/6 in miscellaneous which contains the font. You may prefer to download this newer version instead because it does not require Adobe Type Manager!

Place this System Extension in your Extensions folder and next time you restart NameThatTune will fool the Finder so that you can rename your audio CD's and their songs. In addition, as soon as you insert an audio CD it will start playing. No more having to open CD Remote just to get the music goinPersonally, I have used this Extension for a long time and finally decided to realease it.

It is a system extension, but it is not an INIT. Rather, it is a faceless background application (FBA) that launches when you start or restart your Macintosh computer. Since it is an FBA, it need not include any provision for interaction with you, the user, so it can be a small file; because it is a true application and not an INIT, it is very unlikely that it will conflict with other system extensions that do not also use the sound hardware.

The user inputs the type of crossover, either Butterworth or all pass, the attenuation rate, 6db, 12db, 18db, or 24db per octave. Coconut Info® Beep.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:C:Coconut Info® Beep.sit 0 5K 2/05/92 After several years of engineering we have come up with the most pleasant of beep sounds...particularly suited for a business interest or home environment where even the standard beep tone can turn into an annoyance. We didn't deviate too far... meaning we followed the original beep sound guidelines of replicating the tone of a jet liner when the 'no smoking' or 'fasten your set belts' sign lights up. Descriptively speaking it is a bell sound with no attack, sustained decay, then a gentle release. Just drop the file on your system folder (and it will go in your System). Configured for System 7 users only (just use it as prescribed), but resource hacks can move it in earlier systems.

Launch.sit MusicDL AMUG 15.2:Files II:Music:J-L:Launch.sit 0 28K 1/25/92 Launch - switching startup sounds and screens. There is no easy way (that I know of) to switch StartupSounds. This program runs at startup time and renames files if the following conditions are met. First, the system folder must be named System Folder. Second, the sound files must be renamed to .Soundx where x is a letter from A to Z. The file and folder names are case sensitive. If one has eight SUS's, then the files should be named .SoundA thorugh .SoundH. The first time through, .SoundA will be renamed StartupSound. The next time, StartupSound will named back to .SoundA and .SoundB will be named StartupSound. And so on...
